KENNETH ARTHUR CLACK, DFM31-Mar-194421Squadron Leader, 76 Squadron, Royal Air Force (Volunteer Reserve), No. 124623; born on 30th December 1922 in Willesden, son of Charles (a compositor) and Clara Clack, later of Harrow Weald; attended Kilburn Grammar School 1934-38; worked as a clerk; enlisted in 1940; awarded DFM (gazetted on 21st July 1942) for actions in an attack on the Tirpitz: 'This airman has completed many successful sorties including attacks on targets at Berlin, Mannheim, Stuttgart and Stettin. One night in April, 1942, he was the captain of an aircraft detailed to attack the German naval base at Trondheim. After releasing the bombs his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire which caused one engine to fail and the bomb doors could not be closed. He succeeded in returning to base and landed safely with the bomb doors still open. The following night, as his former aircraft was not serviceable Flight Sergeant Clack volunteered to fly another aircraft to attack the naval base again. He delivered his bombs successfully and machine gunned gun emplacements. His courage and determination have been outstanding.' Died on 31st March 1944 (the night that Bomber Command suffered its heaviest casualties of the war), aged 21, when shot down near Daubhausen flying Halifax LW696 on bombing operations over Nuremberg; buried in Hanover War Cemetery.

(His brother, Sergeant Ralph Stallwood, lost his life in June 1944 while serving with the RAF.)
